Introduction. Many safety problems defy simple interventions. One way to understand this challenge is through the work system concept. Interventions to change multiple work system components are often required, such as people, organization, environment, tools, and tasks. We are often tempted to focus on education as the main mechanism to change behaviors, such as compliance to hand hygiene. Social norms and peer pressures are key as part of the organization component of a work system.
Human behaviors are influenced greatly by their work system. Ideas like “making it easier to do the right thing” may be implemented by buying the right devices or materials, putting them in the right places, and sharing the knowledge of how to do the right thing.
